We have participated in the LIFE “Action on European Peatlands – towards restoring peatlands and realizing their multiple benefits across Europe”, that took place in Berlin between April 26th to 28th 2023

The researchers of the University of Barcelona Aaron Pérez and Eulàlia Pladevall presented, respectively, the LIFE RESQUE ALPYR project and the LIMNOPIRINEUS project, in the Wednesday session hosted by Naturschutzbund Deutschland (NABU).

The LIFE platform meeting aims at improving the perspectives for Europe’s peatlands

Peatlands are home to many rare and threatened species found nowhere else. They help to regulate our climate by storing carbon, reduce flooding and act as a buffer against pollution. But Europe’s peatlands are disappearing fast; today, only 10% are in good condition. Restoring and protecting peatlands can improve water retention and quality, store carbon, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve biodiversity.

The Platform meeting has brought together the latest thinking on methods and techniques to restore European peatlands and revitalize their multiple valuable functions (ecosystem services), possible financing as well as challenges in combining different needs in order to ensure sustainable use of peatlands.

In addition, some flagship projects focusing on best practice, innovative solutions and collaborative working have been showcased. Therefore, this meeting has contributed to provide feedback on these issues to the European Commission, and in particular to DG ENV and DG CLIMA based on practical experiences of implementing LIFE projects.
