This mire system is situated in the SCI Aigüestortes in the peripheral area of Aigüestortes and Estany de Sant Maurici National Park. Afforestation in mires is accelerating due to land abandonment, together with rising temperatures and longer summer dry spells. Trees in mires increase transpiration and cause water table drawdown, a feed-back process. In Locampo, pine cover has tripled since 1997. Clearcutting actions are being undertaken to enhance the conservation of values and maintain the rich biodiversity associated with this singular mire system.
